Average Running Pace by Age and Gender
Table of Contents
"Am I average?" is one of the most-asked questions in running. The honest answer is that "average" depends on which population you compare to — global runners, US runners, recreational racers, or just the person next to you at the start line. This guide pulls together the public data on median pace by age and gender for the four main race distances.
free pace calculator lets you check your own pace against any goal. Use the data below to know whether your current pace is above, below, or right at the typical line for someone your age.
Average 5K Times by Age and Gender
| Age | Men (avg) | Women (avg) |
|---|---|---|
| 20-29 | 26:30 | 30:30 |
| 30-39 | 27:15 | 31:30 |
| 40-49 | 28:30 | 33:00 |
| 50-59 | 30:00 | 34:30 |
| 60-69 | 33:00 | 38:30 |
| 70+ | 38:00 | 43:00 |
These are recreational race medians — people who showed up and ran a 5K, not the general population (which would be much slower because most people don't run 5Ks). The pace per mile equivalents range from about 8:30 (men 20s) to 14:00 (women 70+).
Average 10K Times by Age and Gender
| Age | Men (avg) | Women (avg) |
|---|---|---|
| 20-29 | 53:00 | 1:02:00 |
| 30-39 | 54:30 | 1:03:30 |
| 40-49 | 56:30 | 1:05:30 |
| 50-59 | 1:00:00 | 1:09:00 |
| 60-69 | 1:06:00 | 1:16:00 |
The 10K averages are more reliable than 5K averages because the field is more self-selected — people running 10Ks tend to be more committed runners than 5K participants who include charity walkers.

| Age | Men (avg) | Women (avg) |
|---|---|---|
| 20-29 | 2:00 | 2:14 |
| 30-39 | 2:00 | 2:13 |
| 40-49 | 2:02 | 2:15 |
| 50-59 | 2:08 | 2:24 |
| 60-69 | 2:18 | 2:35 |
Sub-2 hours puts a man under the median in every age group through 50, and a woman under the median in every age group. Sub-2:15 puts a woman under the median through age 50.
Average Marathon Times
| Age | Men (avg) | Women (avg) |
|---|---|---|
| 20-29 | 4:24 | 4:55 |
| 30-39 | 4:21 | 4:48 |
| 40-49 | 4:25 | 4:50 |
| 50-59 | 4:38 | 5:01 |
| 60-69 | 4:54 | 5:23 |
The marathon averages stay surprisingly consistent through age 50 because slower runners drop out of marathoning earlier than fast runners — survivor bias compresses the curve. The drop from 50 to 60 is real and not survivor bias.
Caveats
Three things to know about race average data:
- It is not the general population. These are people who paid to run a race. Random 35-year-olds off the street are much slower.
- Race composition matters. A small local 5K with charity walkers averages slower than a competitive 5K with mostly trained runners.
- "Average" is not "should aim for." The right goal pace is the one that motivates you to train. Compare to averages once for fun, then ignore them.

What is the average 5K time for men?
About 26-28 minutes for adult men in race conditions. The figure varies because race fields differ in composition.
What is the average marathon time?
Around 4:20-4:40 for men and 4:45-5:05 for women across major US marathons. World averages are similar.
Are women slower than men at running?
On average, yes — by about 10-12% across most distances. Individual variation is huge; many women outrun many men at every distance.
