Canva resume templates look great on screen. They also fail ATS screening at most companies. The two-column layouts, graphics, icons, and custom fonts that make Canva resumes pretty are exactly what ATS software cannot parse.

Why Canva resumes fail ATS

Canva is a design tool, not a resume tool. Its resume templates prioritize visual appeal over machine readability. The specific problems:

• Two-column layouts. Most Canva resume templates use a sidebar. ATS reads left to right, line by line. Two columns scramble the reading order, mixing your skills section with your job titles.
• Icons and graphics. Those phone, email, and LinkedIn icons next to your contact info? ATS ignores images. It might miss your phone number entirely.
• Text in graphic elements. Canva sometimes renders text as part of a graphic layer. If the text is not selectable in the PDF, ATS cannot read it.
• Custom fonts. Some Canva fonts do not embed correctly in PDFs. The result: garbled characters in ATS.

When Canva is fine (and when it is not)

Canva is fine for: Creative roles where you email your resume directly to a person (not through a job portal). Graphic designers, UI designers, art directors. In these roles, the visual design of your resume IS part of the application.

Canva is risky for: Any role where you apply through a company website, LinkedIn Easy Apply, Indeed, or any job board. These all use ATS to screen applications. If your formatting breaks, your resume gets rejected automatically.
