What is an electronic signature?

An electronic signature (e-signature) is any electronic indication of intent to agree. It can be a typed name, a drawn signature image, a checkbox, or a click on an I Agree button. A hand-drawn signature image created with a signature pad is one form of electronic signature.

Is a drawn electronic signature legally valid?

In most cases, yes. The ESIGN Act (US, 2000) and eIDAS (EU) give electronic signatures the same legal standing as wet ink signatures for most transactions. Exceptions exist for wills, certain real estate transactions, and court orders, which may require notarized or certified signatures. For everyday business documents, a drawn e-signature is legally accepted.
