The Two Flesch-Kincaid Formulas

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level

Formula: 0.39 × (total words ÷ total sentences) + 11.8 × (total syllables ÷ total words) - 15.59

Outputs a US school grade level. A score of 8.2 means the text requires roughly an 8th-grade reading ability. Two factors drive the score: average sentence length (words per sentence) and average word complexity (syllables per word).

Flesch Reading Ease

Formula: 206.835 - 1.015 × (total words ÷ total sentences) - 84.6 × (total syllables ÷ total words)

Outputs a 0-100 score where higher = easier to read. Most readable content falls between 60-70. This score is useful for comparing two versions of the same text — did your edits make it easier or harder to read?

How to Improve Your Flesch-Kincaid Score

Both formulas use the same two inputs. Improve either one and your score improves:

Lower Your Average Sentence Length

Target: 15-20 words per sentence average. Find every sentence over 25 words. Split it at the conjunction. "We launched the product last quarter and it exceeded expectations because the marketing team ran a targeted campaign" becomes two sentences: "We launched the product last quarter. It exceeded expectations because the marketing team ran a targeted campaign."

Lower Your Average Syllable Count

Target: 1.4-1.6 syllables per word average. Replace any word with 3+ syllables if a 1-2 syllable word conveys the same meaning. "Approximately" (5 syllables) → "About" (2). "Requirement" (3) → "Need" (1). "Demonstrate" (3) → "Show" (1).

Workflow: Improve Any Text

  1. Calculate Flesch-Kincaid — baseline score
  2. Split long sentences — target under 20 words each
  3. Replace complex words with simpler alternatives
  4. Convert passive voice to active: "was completed by the team" → "the team completed"
  5. Tone rewriter on "Simple" — automatic simplification
  6. Grammar check the simplified text
  7. Recalculate — confirm grade level dropped
