Free ATS resume format — download as PDF

75% of resumes get rejected by ATS software before a recruiter ever reads them. The most common reason? Formatting. Fancy layouts, tables, columns, headers, footers, and embedded graphics all break ATS parsers.
An ATS-friendly resume uses a single-column layout, standard fonts, clear section headings, and plain text. No graphics, no tables, no text boxes. And the best format to lock that layout in place is PDF.
What makes a resume ATS-friendly
ATS (Applicant Tracking System) software scans your resume for keywords, job titles, skills, and education. It needs to read the text correctly. These formatting choices help it do that:
- Single column. Two-column layouts confuse most ATS parsers. They read left to right, line by line. Two columns scramble the reading order.
- Standard fonts. Arial, Calibri, Georgia, Times New Roman. Custom or decorative fonts sometimes render as garbage characters.
- No tables or text boxes. ATS often skips content inside tables and text boxes entirely. Your contact info in a header text box? Gone.
- Clear section headings. Use standard names: Experience, Education, Skills, Summary. Creative headings like "My Journey" or "Toolbox" can confuse the parser.
- No images or graphics. ATS cannot read images. That means no headshots, no skill-level bar charts, no icons.
- Machine-readable text. The PDF must contain actual text, not a scanned image of text. Browser-generated PDFs use real text by default.
How to format your resume in 60 seconds
- Open the Resume PDF Formatter
- Type your name
- Paste your resume content using simple Markdown formatting:
- Lines starting with # become section headings
- Lines starting with - or * become bullet points
- **Bold text** for emphasis
- Blank lines for spacing
- Pick a template style
- Preview and download your PDF
The tool generates a clean, single-column PDF with standard fonts and proper heading structure. Exactly what ATS expects.

ATS resume format rules
- Use standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills, Summary)
- Put your name and contact info at the very top, not in a header or footer
- Use reverse chronological order for experience
- Include the month and year for each position (Jan 2023 - Present)
- Use bullet points for accomplishments, not paragraphs
- Start each bullet with an action verb (Led, Built, Reduced, Managed)
- Include keywords from the job description naturally in your content
- Save as PDF unless the posting specifically requests .docx
