You are standing in a store. The tag says "30% off $79.99." You want to know what you actually pay before you walk to the register. This guide gives you both the formula and the mental shortcut so you never have to dig out your phone.

If you would rather skip the math entirely, free discount calculator does it instantly — but the methods below work in your head if you remember them.

The Formula

The basic formula has two steps:

  1. Calculate the discount amount: Original Price × (Discount Percent ÷ 100)
  2. Subtract from original: Original Price - Discount Amount = Sale Price

Example: 30% off $80.

You can collapse it into one step: Sale Price = Original Price × (1 - Discount Percent ÷ 100). For 30% off $80: $80 × 0.70 = $56. Same answer.

The Mental Math Shortcut

For most discount percentages, there is a faster mental method that does not require multiplication.

10% off: Move the decimal point one place to the left. 10% of $79 is $7.90. Subtract: $79 - $7.90 = $71.10.

20% off: Calculate 10% (move decimal), then double it. 10% of $79 = $7.90. Double = $15.80. Subtract: $79 - $15.80 = $63.20.

25% off: Divide by 4 to get the discount. $80 ÷ 4 = $20. Subtract: $80 - $20 = $60.

50% off: Half the price. $80 ÷ 2 = $40. Done.

15% off: Calculate 10% + half of 10%. 10% of $80 = $8. Half = $4. Add: $12. Subtract: $80 - $12 = $68.

These tricks work for any starting number once you practice them. Most people can do them in under five seconds for round numbers.

When the Numbers Are Ugly

The mental tricks fall apart when the original price is something like $129.99 and the discount is 37%. Now the math is genuinely hard, and getting it wrong by even a few dollars is annoying when you are deciding whether to buy.

This is where free discount calculator earns its keep. Type in $129.99 and 37%, and you instantly see the discount ($48.10), the sale price ($81.89), and what tax adds if your local rate is included. No mental gymnastics, no calculator app to download.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is "20% off" the same as "20% discount"?

Yes — they mean the exact same thing. The word "off" just makes the language easier to understand at a glance. The math is identical.

How do I check the math on a sale tag?

Use ${TOOL_LINK_2}. Enter the original price and the discount percentage. The result should match what is on the tag. If it does not, the store may have already factored in something else (like an extra coupon or member discount).

What if the sale shows the final price but not the percent off?

Use the reverse calculation: Discount % = ((Original - Sale) ÷ Original) × 100. Example: original $100, sale $75, discount = (25 / 100) × 100 = 25%.
