Position Size Calculator for Crypto — Bitcoin, Ethereum, Altcoins

Crypto moves fast. Bitcoin can drop $3,000 in an hour. Altcoins can lose 15% overnight. Without position sizing, one bad trade in crypto can wipe out weeks of gains. The position sizing formula works the same way for crypto as it does for stocks and forex — but the wider stop losses and higher volatility mean your position sizes should be smaller than you think.

Position Sizing Formula for Crypto

Position Size = (Account x Risk %) / (Entry - Stop Loss)

Example: $10,000 account, 1% risk, buying ETH at $3,200 with stop at $3,050:

• Dollar risk: $10,000 x 1% = $100
• Risk per coin: $3,200 - $3,050 = $150
• Position size: $100 / $150 = 0.667 ETH
• Position value: 0.667 x $3,200 = $2,133 (21% of account)

If ETH drops to $3,050, you lose exactly $100 — 1% of your account. Not 21% (the position value). Position value and risk are different things.

Why Crypto Needs Smaller Positions

Crypto is 3-5x more volatile than stocks. A "normal" day for Bitcoin includes 2-5% swings. Altcoins regularly move 5-15% per day. This means:

• Wider stop losses: A BTC stop loss of $1,000-$3,000 below entry is common. For a $10,000 account at 1% risk ($100), that means buying only 0.03-0.10 BTC
• Smaller position values: Your position sizes (in dollar terms) will be smaller than stock positions because the stop distances are wider
• More gap risk: Crypto trades 24/7 but major news can still cause instant price jumps that skip past your stop loss. Exchanges can have liquidity gaps during flash crashes

Position Sizing with Leverage

Many crypto exchanges offer 2x-125x leverage. Leverage does not change the position sizing formula, but it changes how much margin you need:

The dollar risk ($50) is the same regardless of leverage. What changes is how much capital is locked as margin. Higher leverage frees up capital but also means liquidation is closer. At 20x leverage, a 5% adverse move liquidates the position.

The safe approach: calculate your position size based on your actual risk tolerance (1% of account), then use leverage only to free up margin — not to take bigger positions than the formula allows.

Crypto-Specific Risks to Account For

• Exchange downtime: If the exchange goes down during high volatility, your stop loss cannot execute. Keep position sizes small enough to survive a scenario where your stop loss does not trigger
• Liquidity gaps: Altcoins with thin order books can gap through stop losses. A stop at $10.00 might fill at $9.50 or lower if there are no buyers at $10. Factor slippage into your risk calculation
• Funding rates: Perpetual futures charge funding rates every 8 hours. During high volatility, these can eat into profits. Not a position sizing issue, but a cost to consider
• Correlation: Most altcoins follow Bitcoin. If you have 5 altcoin positions, you effectively have 5 correlated bets. A Bitcoin crash takes all of them down simultaneously
