Most traders obsess over finding winning trades. They should obsess over finding good risk-to-reward setups instead. A trader who wins 35% of the time at 3:1 R:R makes more money than a trader who wins 55% at 1:1. The math is clear - and most people ignore it.
Calculate R:R for any trade setup before you enter.
Open Risk Reward CalculatorTwo traders. Same $50,000 account. Same 1% risk ($500 per trade). 100 trades each.
| Trader A (High Win Rate) | Trader B (High R:R) | |
|---|---|---|
| Win rate | 60% | 35% |
| R:R ratio | 1:1 | 3:1 |
| Risk per trade | $500 | $500 |
| Reward per trade | $500 | $1,500 |
| Wins (100 trades) | 60 wins x $500 = $30,000 | 35 wins x $1,500 = $52,500 |
| Losses (100 trades) | 40 losses x $500 = $20,000 | 65 losses x $500 = $32,500 |
| Net profit | +$10,000 | +$20,000 |
| Return | 20% | 40% |
Trader B wins only 35% of the time but makes twice as much money. Trader B loses on 65 out of 100 trades - nearly two-thirds are losers - and still doubles the account by 40%. The ratio overwhelms the win rate.
This table shows the minimum win rate needed to break even at each R:R ratio:
| R:R Ratio | Breakeven Win Rate | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5:1 | 67% | Need to win 2 out of 3 trades |
| 1:1 | 50% | Need to win half |
| 1.5:1 | 40% | Need to win 2 out of 5 |
| 2:1 | 33% | Need to win 1 out of 3 |
| 3:1 | 25% | Need to win 1 out of 4 |
| 4:1 | 20% | Need to win 1 out of 5 |
| 5:1 | 17% | Need to win 1 out of 6 |
At 3:1 R:R, you only need to win 25% of trades to break even. Anything above 25% is profit. Most traders can maintain a 35-45% win rate with basic chart reading. Combined with 3:1 R:R, that is a highly profitable system.
| Style | Typical R:R | Why | Win Rate Needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scalping | 1.5:1 to 2:1 | Tight stops, quick targets | 40-50% |
| Day trading | 2:1 to 3:1 | Standard for intraday moves | 25-40% |
| Swing trading | 3:1 to 5:1 | More time for larger moves | 20-35% |
| Position trading | 5:1 to 10:1 | Weeks/months for big moves | 15-25% |
| Options buying | 3:1+ | Premium is risk, target is high | 25-35% |
Trading at 1:1 R:R feels safe because your target equals your stop loss. But it is a mathematical trap:
At 2:1 R:R, a 5-trade losing streak costs $2,500. But the next 3 wins recover $3,000. At 1:1, a 5-trade streak costs $2,500 and the next 3 wins only recover $1,500. Higher R:R makes recovery easier.
Know your R:R before every trade.
