Shopify gives every store SEO out of the box, but the defaults are generic. Product pages get titles like "Blue T-Shirt — YourStore" and descriptions auto-generated from the first 160 characters of the product description. This is fine. It is not great. The stores that beat their competitors on Google get there by overriding the defaults page by page. This guide shows you how to test those overrides before they go live.

Use the free SERP preview tool to preview every product and collection page snippet before you ship.

The Default Problem

Shopify's default title pattern is {{ product.title }} — {{ shop.name }}. For a product called "Premium Cotton T-Shirt" in a store called "Acme Apparel," that becomes "Premium Cotton T-Shirt — Acme Apparel" — 36 characters. You have 24 unused characters of valuable SERP real estate sitting there doing nothing.

The default description pulls the first ~160 characters of the product description, which often starts with marketing fluff ("Welcome to Acme — your home for...") instead of specific product details.

Override both. The improvement to CTR is significant.

Where to Override SEO in Shopify

Every product, collection, blog post, and page in Shopify has an "Edit website SEO" section near the bottom of the editor. You can set:

You can also override globally via your theme's templates, but per-page overrides usually win because they let you tailor each one to its specific keyword.

Collection Page Snippets

Collection pages (category pages) are bigger CTR opportunities than product pages because they target broader, higher-volume keywords. The default title is usually just the collection name. Override with descriptive copy:

Default: "Men's T-Shirts — Acme Apparel"

Improved: "Men's Premium Cotton T-Shirts — 23 Styles, Free Shipping | Acme"

The improved version tells the searcher what is on the page, how many options, and a value prop. It will outperform the default on CTR by a significant margin.

Mobile Shopping Snippets

Most Shopify traffic is mobile. Mobile snippets truncate sooner. Always preview both views in the free SERP preview tool. A title that looks great on desktop may get cut off mid-sentence on mobile.

For mobile-heavy stores, put the most clickable phrase in the first 50 characters and treat anything after that as bonus.

Apps That Get in the Way

Some Shopify SEO apps (Plug In SEO, SEO Manager, Smart SEO) auto-generate titles and descriptions in bulk. They are useful for fixing missing tags, but the auto-generated output is generic. After running an SEO app, manually review and override the highest-traffic pages with custom snippets. The bulk fixes are the floor; manual overrides on top pages are the ceiling.

The Testing Workflow

  1. Pick your top 20 pages by traffic (use Search Console)
  2. For each, draft a custom title and meta description
  3. Preview each one in the free SERP preview tool
  4. Compare desktop and mobile views
  5. Update in Shopify, deploy
  6. Wait 30 days, check Search Console for CTR change
  7. Iterate the underperformers
